Hub Motor Kit — 30-Minute Install
What You Need
Step 1: Remove Old Wheel (5 min)
Open quick-release or loosen axle nuts. Remove wheel. If rear: first shift to smallest sprocket, then drop chain off. Keep your cassette — you'll swap it to the motor wheel.
Step 2: Swap Cassette (5 min)
Remove cassette from old wheel using cassette tool + chain whip (or take it to a shop for £5). Install on motor wheel freewheel body. Hand-tighten, then use cassette tool to snug it down.
Step 3: Swap Tyre (10 min)
Remove tyre and tube from old wheel using tyre levers. Mount on motor wheel. Inflate to recommended PSI (check tyre sidewall).
Step 4: Install Motor Wheel (5 min)
For rear: thread chain over smallest sprocket, drop axle into dropouts. The motor cable exits from the non-drive side — route it upward along the chainstay. Close quick-release firmly or torque axle nuts to 25Nm.
Step 5: Mount Controller (3 min)
Use velcro straps or zip ties to mount the controller under the down tube or behind the seat tube. The controller runs hot — leave airspace around it.
Step 6: Route and Connect (5 min)
Route the motor cable along the frame. Run throttle and display cables to the handlebar. All connectors are colour-coded — they only fit their matching plug. Zip tie every 10cm.
Step 7: Test
Power on. Check all connections seated. Test throttle response with wheel off ground. Test PAS by pedalling slowly. Check brakes — cutoff sensors should kill motor immediately.
